In the summer of 2023, a bunch of friends and I rented a mansion in St. John, Canada for a long weekend getaway. On the days people weren’t biking, we hiked the rocky Canadian coast in search of lighthouses and remote beaches. For better or for worse, we only saw the sun the last hour of the trip, which meant that most of our hikes included portaging through inches of mud or wading through water up to our knees while we got drenched. Yet there was something so riveting about the misty landscape, and it almost felt like we were in the PNW rather than the East Coast. If it wasn’t for the brutal weather, I could have watched the water pouring off the sides of the cliffs for hours.
